Interests

Development and translation of biomarkers into clinical in vitro diagnostic tests
Both methodologies and practice in the design and execution of studies and experiments for biomarker discovery and translation which requires the integration of multidisciplinary knowledge.
Machine learning and statistical learning for in vitro diagnostic multivariate index assay (IVDMIA) development
The application of AI/machine/statistical learning to derive multivariate models of biomarkers to improve early detection of cancer has its unique challenges. It is essentially an ill-defined learning problem in that the amount of training data (except for imaging data) are typically insufficient to derive models with decision surfaces that match the complexity and heterogeneity of cancer. The learning process therefore requires the quantitative integration of existing clinical and biological knowledge/data to help to reduce the search space in learning. Dr. Zhang is interested in developing efficient learning algorithms that allows for the numeric infusion of existing data/knowledge.
