Talal El-Hefnawy, M.D., Ph.D. is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a Member of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Dr. El-Hefnawy’s research interests include: identification of new diagnostic markers for early detection of malignancies using tumor-specific/related biomarkers including cancer nucleic acids and proteins and tissue/host response-specific markers including circulating cytokines and autoantibodies; evaluating the potential hazards of environmental pollutants on the development and progression of malignancies and identification of natural antagonists to potential environmental carcinogens, and identification of chemical exposure biomarkers that predict malignant transformation/disease prognosis; and characterization of molecular events involved in epigenetic silencing of gene expression in cancer cells for new biomarker discovery and novel therapeutic targeting of the cancer cells.
