Lactic acid, or lactate, is a metabolite that is produced during muscle contraction as a product of anaerobic glucose metabolism. According to ChEBI, it is a hydroxy monocarboxylic acid anion that is the conjugate base of lactic acid, arising from deprotonation of the carboxy group.
