MPO
Basics
Aliases:
This biomarker is also known as:- myeloperoxidase,
Description…
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a lysosomal heme protein found at chromosomal location 17q23.1. It is produced as a single chain precursor that is cleaved into two parts, a light chain and a heavy chain. The mature form of MPO is a tetramer made up of 2 light chains and 2 heavy chains. MPO is synthesized during myeloid differentiation and comprises the major component of neutrophil azurophilic granules. It is part of the host defense system of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. The production of hypohalous acids by MPO is responsible for microbicidal activity against a wide range of organisms.
